  1. Said I would post my progress photos of the weld head that I'm working on. Not so much to present just yet, but I'm going to try some initial testing with a small salvaged piston:http://www.ogilumen.com/images/custom/piston.jpg
And I've got a very solid steel/aluminum base put together from scrap pieces. http://www.ogilumen.com/images/custom/weldhead.jpg
    More to follow...

  2. Hi Fritz,
When will be avalable ver2.5 of firmware? Are you changed charging system to software PWM in this version?

  5. Not to be impertinent, but with the price of the comparable Suncoast units and the number of people going through the trouble of building their own, I'm surprised that someone isn't having a similar welder built in China and that they're not for sale at Harbor Freight. What are the prospects for something like that happening? I've been wanting to repair some nicad battery packs and don't have the resources to purchase or resources and skills to to build my own welder. BTW, I'm really impressed with what you have done.

  8. Would it be possible with this 600Ws CD welder to weld brass M3 screw to 2mm brass sheet. I need to weld brass pin post to brass pin badge or M3 brass screw to brass pin badge.

  9. I never tried to weld brass but I think the properties will be very similar to copper. I think a Pulse Arc Welder is a better choice to weld brass.

    1. Hi Fritz,
I was thinking that maybe your CD welder could do something like on this links http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBMzWXkR8nI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7CQ4vuyKI8&feature=plcp

  10. Instead of using one 3Farad capacitor, what about conecting i parallel large number of smaller electrolitic capacitors. What problems could occur. I am asking this because I read on one forum a post from a guy who used to build CDW machine in this way and it worked ok.

    1. Yes, a bunch of smaller capacitors in parallel totaling 3F will also work. My welder has three 1Farad capacitors in parallel.

  11. Hi im very much interested in purchasing this from you, but I am wondering when you will have the boards back in stock and what the cost would be? im available on xiaolong@xiaolong.co.uk

  12. Included in the document package are files that you can send to a manufacturer or you can use it to make the PCB's yourself. I will get more boards in the new year.

  13. interesting..... could this be done with a diy etching tank then? id be interested if seeing if you can get more boards to be honest, im not sure where in the UK i would go for such workmanship. Excellent product :) Have you got a rough idea when in the new year you would have the new boards?

  14. Hello Fritz,
Is it possible to just purchase the programmed microprocessor? I have built the welder according to your schematics, have done all of the tests, and when I got to the last test with the foot switch, nothing happened. I reread your trouble shooting guide and will be testing for the 5V pulse from the processor. I'm hoping that this is the problem. It would be much easier to just replace the processor than to try to find the malfunctioning mosfet.

    Thank you,

  15. Hi, have just bought a 5F Cap for building my own battery welder after a bad experiance with a cheap chinese pulse welder. Do you have parts in stock?

  16. Yes I do have PCB's and processors for this welder in stock

  17. That comment in January 2014 sounds very much like my experiences with inferior welders! This is a brilliant project - very well done to you.

I have a reasonable knowledge of electronics and I think I am capable of building this with the plans and starting out by buying the MOSFET and Control PCBs and the processor with firmware on it.

I'm looking to weld 0.15mm thick pure nickel to Li-ion cells. I presume this welder would be able to do that and perhaps even be able to do 0.20mm thick nickel.

What are your stock levels like for the PCBs and the processors?

    Best regards,

    Luke

  19. Nice one Fritz - Just put my order in and busy looking at the schematics. I'm going to take my time with it and go steady as this will be a big step up from what I have done before. The diagrams are very clear and this will make it much easier to complete. It could take me many months but I will get there in the end. Many thanks and eventually I hope to post some photos of the completed welder.

  21. Hello: I was wondering how fast the circuit resets. in other words, how many pulses per second can you make? I want to use this supply for a seam weld using a copper wheel, and I wanted to see how fast you could advance the wheel. I need a continuous weld without gaps

    ReplyDelete
  22. Dan, it all depends on the voltage, pulse timing and resistance you are welding. At about 12v with a first pulse of 0.7ms and a second pulse of 12 ms you should be able to get three welds/ second. This welder was not designed to do continuous welding though and you might have to make changes to the charging circuit though.

  23. Bonjour Fritz !

I am having a hard time finding a solution to weld piano wire together. This is for an artsy sculptural project, and I just need tacks to keep the wire between 1 and 2mm (approx. 1/16") together. Would you think that your welder handles this?

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Ted

  34. I was thinking of buying one of the cheap Chinese welders for welding battery tabs when I stumbled upon your site! A little bit of overkill for spot welding batteries but the idea of building one is interesting. What kind of circuit would be needed to power this welder without blowing breakers?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi,
Are you still selling these plans and circuit boards?
Im looking to spot weld up to .02" thick copper sheets together and am having a tough time finding anything commercial or custom that can handle this, any insight to what thickness copper 800Ws can handle with a small weld surface area (tungsten electrodes)?. Are the mofsets the only thing limiting the capability? Do you think it would be feasible to basically have two mofset/ cap banks in parallel?

    Thanks for the help!
    -Charlie

  36. Hi Charlie, I do not have any boards but can sell you the plans for the welder, email me at sprbok@gmail.com. These type of welders are not good for welding copper. Resistance is heat and copper have a very low resitance. I think using a microwave transformer will do better.

  37. Hello Fritz, I'm wondering if the version 2.5 HEX file is still available? I built my welder quite a while back. The file that came with my purchase is named CapWelderVer210.HEX. However it also came with another file named VER2.5 INSTRUCTIONS.doc, which seems to indicate that with a hardware mod (100ohm resistor, plus other things), the display will show it's booting in 2.5 mode? Is that true? or do I need a whole new HEX file? Please let me know as I have ordered some better capacitors and would like to do this upgrade. Thank you, in advance.
